Mission

Global Writes, is a nonprofit organization promoting literacy, communication and collaboration among young people through the integration of the arts, community building, and technology resources.

Skin in the Game

Built on Global Writes nationally recognized curriculum, Skin in the Game utilizes game design and concepts in Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math (STREAM) to engage participants in advanced, interdisciplinary learning.

This K-12 program provides opportunities for students to create 2D board games that can transition into 3D video and VR games using technology based applications. With a focus on story elements found in fiction and informational texts, students work in teams to design, prototype and build games exploring characters, plot and conflict resolution. Teams tackle project based work in a variety of real world roles. Closely tied to school day curriculum, SIG promotes pathways to academic and professional success.

“I can see the good they are doing in the world, which I think everyone would like to see more of, especially in schools.”

Our Story

In 2005, Global Writes launched Bronx Writes, a collaborative writing and performance project. Today, Bronx students still enjoy the program combining creative writing, performance and the sharing of their work world wide via video conference. By inviting students, teachers, school districts and families to participate, the program has had a transformative effect in Bronx learning communities and beyond. Following the success of Bronx Writes, GW continues to innovate and find meaningful intersections in standards based curriculum, the arts and technology.

Global Writes latest project, Skin in the Game, combines modern game design and STREAM promoting interdisciplinary learning. SIG is supported through a NYSED Student Support and Academic Enrichment grant in Amityville Union School District, an AAEDD grant in Delaware County, PA, as well as two Learning Technology Grants in New York’s Bronx Districts 7 and 10.

Global Writes has been awarded three AEMDD grants (A Tale of Two Cities, Honoring Student Voices, and POETRY Express), two NEA grants (The Mirror and the Canyon: Reflected Images, Echoed Voices and The Mirror and the Canyon: Reflected Images, Echoed Voices: Chapter Two), and a 21st CCLC grant (A2+ B2 = C2: Arts and Academia Bridging Boundaries, Empowering Collaborative Communities Program).

For more than 15 years, Global Writes has collaborated with school districts, arts organizations, families and cultural workers to amplify the voices of young people in The Bronx and beyond. Integrating academics with arts instruction, GW programming engages participants in creative exploration, problem solving, and asset-based community collaboration.

March 5, 2011 - Global Writes gave a TED talk at the New York Academy of Sciences in New York City centering students from the Bronx Writes Program, live via videoconference.
