How we work

Global Writes partners and creates with students, teachers, schools and families to build strong learning communities. By combining local resources with 21st century technologies, GW programs nurture a culture of asset based problem solving and collaboration.

A Sustainable Process

Global Writes activates innovative projects through community collaboration and training support. Participating cohorts and leadership teams experience intensive hands-on process and technology workshops to support programing and deepen teaching and learning practices. Focused on long-term goals and sustainability, GW employs a custom 4 Step Approach:

  1. On site project planning with school leaders. Review of current assets (tech capabilities, available hardware) and development of a successful work plan.

  2. Professional development sessions aligned with school schedule (school day, after school, PD time, Saturday sessions).

  3. Project based learning tech integration with modeling and teacher participation.

  4. Development of school technology leadership to provide continuity and sustainability beyond GW professional development.

Global Writes Outcomes

Global Writes participants benefit from improved writing quality, increased knowledge retention (up to 50% for ELL students) and higher attendance rates (up to 7%).

By engaging with multiple learning styles, GW participants also show significant achievement in Social Emotional Learning. Students that took the Skills Improvement System (SSIS) Rating Scale pre-post survey demonstrated gains in the areas of Assertion, Empathy, and Responsibility. (see NEA report attached).

In 2014, Global Writes and colleagues from Metis Associates published an article In the Journal for Learning through the Arts on the Global Writes/Bronx Writes model and its impact on different communities around the country. (Article Link)

Studies of the Global Writes program have met ESSA Tiers II and III evidence standards and focused on the effects of the intervention on students’ ELA achievement and social-emotional outcomes.(Wallace Foundation Article Link)
